Pope Leo XIV will not need any further treatment after surgeons removed a tumor from his right lung, his doctors said in a statement released by the Holy See Press Office on Wednesday evening, Oct. 21.

Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora said final histopathology and molecular testing reports, issued Oct. 21, confirmed the tumor was a lung adenocarcinoma and that the disease was localized. A follow-up oncological assessment found that “no further treatment is necessary,” according to Vatican News.

Margaritora performed the operation Oct. 13, removing the lower lobe of the pope's right lung.

In a separate Vatican News interview published Oct. 17, the surgeon described the operation as routine.

Lung adenocarcinoma is a form of lung cancer. The doctors' statement was based on the final lab reports and the oncology review that followed them.
